What a day we had on Saturday, July 31, at Walgreens in Byram! Store Manager Corey Johnson and his crew grilled hot dogs and provided chips, drinks, snow cones, and popcorn for folks who brought school supplies to help JABT members fill the bus. He also arranged for a space jump for the kids and provided a basketball game and gift card as door prizes. Durham School Services donated the bus, and the Byram Volunteer Fire Department gave away rulers and coloring books. We received cash donations in addition to all the school supplies–which overflowed nine large shopping carts–and used the cash to purchase additional school supplies.
Today, we delivered the supplies to Gary Road Elementary and Gary Road Intermediate Schools. The teachers were thrilled to receive the items for kids in need. In these hard economic times, it’s more important than ever for us to help each other–and JABT is excited to be able to contribute to our community.

2009 JABT Stuff the Bus School Supply Drive
Our August 1 “Stuff the Bus” School Supply Drive was a huge success. We received plenty of pencils, bottles of glue, notebooks, paper, scissors, rulers, etc., and enough cash donations, including three from the Rotary Club of Southern Hinds County, MacNificent Rentals, and Cartridge World of Clinton, to buy the items we didn’t receive. Kroger donated two gas cards, which we gave away to two lucky people who brought supplies to the bus. And in addition, the Plum Creek Timber Company and The Mississippi Link, a local newspaper, donated boxes of supplies. The paper also sent someone to cover the event.
Thank you so much, Byram, Terry, and all of our friends!! Special thanks to Walgreens, for letting us use their parking lot for the event; to First Student, for providing the bus; and to all the stores who allowed us to put out collection boxes. We also owe a debt of gratitude to The Byram Banner, Dr. Ramsey and his staff, WAPT, and Dr. Steven Handley of Hinds County Schools. We wouldn’t have been nearly as successful if not for all of you.
